At the present time, ongoing efforts are
aimed at removing the United Nations from the negotiations in Cyprus
and replacing it with mediators from the United States. We are hereby
opposed to such intentions as it is a clear conflict of interest.
Washington continues to assist the Kemalist entity militarily,
economically, and politically, and as such cannot be a neutral
mediator. Furthermore, the role of the United States in the events of
July and August 1974 is well known, and as such cannot be fair or
impartial.
The above petition seeks to gather support for the inalienable rights
of Cyprus.
The recent history of Cyprus has consisted of twin Turkish invasions during the summer of 1974, the ethnic cleansing of 200,000 Hellenic Cypriots from their homes, lands, and property, and an unceasing Turkish occupation that is being subsidized by the assistance given to Turkey by the United States, NATO, and Israel.
More recently, during the summer of 1996 several Greek Cypriots weremurdered in cold blood by Turkish backed death squads. The present agony of Cyprus came about because of the betrayal against the movement for enosis during the 1950's by the British who encouraged Turkish terrorism and expansionism at the expense of Cypriot Hellenes. Further
betrayals occurred during the signing of the accords in 1959 when Cyprus was forced to adopt an unjust and unworkable constitution.
Most recently, external pressure on Cyprus manifested itself in December 1998 when the Cypriot government was forced to cease its announced deployment of defensive anti-aircraft missiles as a result of Turkish threats to bomb the free government of Cyprus.
As such, the petition here seeks to address the present status of Cyprus and to gain international support against further unjust external pressures aimed at sacrificing Cyprus.
The petition seeks to gain support for the unconditional principles upon which the liberation of Cyprus will depend. The complete withdrawal of Turkish forces and settlers from Cyprus, the unconditional return of all occupied land and homes to the original occupants, and the restoration of the sovereignty of the Republic of Cyprus in accordance with international law.
The petition rejects all further attempts to exert pressure on, or impose a solution contrary to the interests of Hellenism on Cyprus.
