Byzantine Empire, one of the longest-living states ever, played maybe the most important role in the history of the world. It was the mixture and synthesis of two distant cultures: the Rome and Christianity. But, given today point of view, we miss the fact that these two cultures in the core succeed in Byzantium. The great genuity of the Eastern Roman (Byzantine) philosophy helped them merge and form today European culture. The spirit of Union could be best seen in the Byzantine history. Different cultures and traditions were held all together, but, unlike in the Rome, in Byzantium they were not held by force, but by Orthodoxy, culture, and economy. The notion of nationalism was first formed in Byzantium, describing Unity among Byzantines and dedication to the state, Emperor, and to Christianity. The cosmic Christian Mission the Empire played in Baptism and spreading of Christianity could be seen everywhere - from Russia, Balkan, Sicily, to Middle East and India. The first literacy of the Slavs could be seen today in the Cyrillic letters, called by Saint Cyril , they use in writing. Even the first literacy in England (among the natives) came from Byzantine monks who came there in the 7th century. Also :
